Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police have taken a major leap forward in security with the launch of a groundbreaking AI-powered system in Peshawar. This system, the first of its kind in the country, is designed to significantly enhance security measures within the city’s red zone, a high-security area encompassing government buildings and other sensitive locations.
The AI system, developed by the Central Police Office, continuously analyzes data and facial recognition scans of the estimated 57,000 individuals entering the red zone daily. This comprehensive data collection extends to vehicles and motorcycles as well.
The system incorporates a unique feature: a database of female militants, terrorists, and criminals. Any individual matching this profile attempting to enter the red zone will trigger an immediate alarm, alerting the nearest police check post.
But the AI’s reach extends beyond human threats. The system even monitors bird activity within the red zone, further tightening security measures.
“This project, the first of its kind in Pakistan, is a testament to the cooperation between various security forces,” stated K-P Inspector General (IG) Police Akhtar Hayat Khan. He highlighted the system’s potential to revolutionize investigations by providing real-time data access, enabling faster response times and suspect apprehension.
The initial phase focuses on Peshawar’s red zone, with future expansion planned for Balahisar Fort and the Cantonment area. This technology is expected to transform the city’s security apparatus, offering unparalleled protection for critical infrastructure.
Senior K-P police officials, including CCPO Peshawar Syed Ashfaq Anwar, emphasized the effectiveness of AI-powered security systems. Anwar cited the example of the US and UK, where extensive CCTV camera networks combined with AI have significantly reduced crime rates.
Peshawar’s red zone now boasts approximately 350 AI-equipped CCTV cameras. These advanced cameras can identify individuals wearing masks or helmets by matching their facial features with National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) records. Security checks will bar those who attempt to conceal their identity with masks or helmets.
The AI system also incorporates sophisticated surveillance features. Invisible “red lines” are digitally marked on the walls of sensitive buildings. If anyone crosses these lines, attempts to breach a barrier, or exhibits suspicious behavior, an automatic alarm will trigger, mobilizing Quick Response Teams for immediate intervention.
This innovative AI security system marks a significant step forward for Peshawar, demonstrating Pakistan’s commitment to leveraging technology to create a safer future for its citizens.
