National Institutional Facilitation Technologies, the backbone of Pakistan’s cheque clearing system, faced a major cyberattack last week. The attempted breach targeted both of NIFT’s data centers in Islamabad and Karachi, causing temporary disruptions.
NIFT released a statement assuring the public that the attack was “contained on an immediate basis” and no significant data compromise occurred. They are currently investigating the incident with the help of a top-tier security firm under the supervision of the State Bank of Pakistan.
While the investigation is ongoing, NIFT maintains there is no evidence of employee negligence. They are working diligently to restore services and have already resumed cheque clearing, albeit with a modified process.
Despite the attack, NIFT emphasizes that “day-to-day cheque clearing operations are continuing” and they are collaborating with banks under the State Bank’s supervision to ensure smooth processing. This temporary shift demonstrates the effectiveness of their disaster recovery plans.
