Meta Introduces Muse Image AI Tool That Allows Use Of Public Instagram Photos For AI Generated Content

Meta has introduced Muse Image, its first image focused artificial intelligence model from Superintelligence Labs, bringing new capabilities that allow users to create AI generated content using public Instagram photos and reels. The feature is enabled by default and lets people use public content from Instagram accounts to generate personalized images, invitations, creative concepts, and graphics that can be shared across Meta’s platforms and other services. Through the Meta AI app, users can also mention Instagram accounts directly in prompts, allowing the system to incorporate public photos from those profiles into newly generated visuals.

According to Meta, Muse Image has been designed with advanced reasoning capabilities that enable it to understand complex prompts and blend multiple photos into high quality creations. The technology is also being integrated into Instagram and WhatsApp to support AI powered effects for Instagram Stories and image generation within direct chats using Meta AI. Initially, these features are being rolled out in a limited number of countries. The company said users can create new reels, posts, and stories that reuse part or all of another person’s public photos, videos, or reels, effectively turning publicly available Instagram content into material for AI generated imagery. Meta has also noted in its support documentation that content created through these AI features may become discoverable through search engine results depending on another user’s settings.

The company said users maintain control over how their content can be used for AI creation and can disable the feature through their account settings. Instagram users can navigate to their profile settings, access the Sharing and Reuse section, and turn off options that allow people to create with and reuse their posts and reels. However, Meta clarified that any content generated before the setting is disabled will not be removed. If an account changes from public to private and remains private for more than 24 hours, reels, posts, and stories that directly use that content will be deleted from Instagram. Existing content already created by others using AI features, however, will remain available. For users under the age of 18 with public accounts, only followers can reuse their media if account settings permit such activity. Meta also stated that users will not receive notifications when their images are remixed using AI, although notifications will continue for certain types of content reuse such as remixes, sequences, stickers, and templates.

The launch of Muse Image reflects a broader trend among technology companies that are increasingly embedding artificial intelligence features into consumer services and enabling them by default rather than requiring users to opt in. Meta’s latest announcement comes as Google has also introduced new privacy related settings that allow the company to store media such as images, files, audio, and video recordings to improve its AI models for signed in users. Google has additionally introduced a Personalized Recommendations setting that uses profile information, search history, and activity across its services to deliver tailored search results, AI responses, and curated content feeds. The growing use of user generated content and personal activity data to develop and improve AI systems continues to raise questions around privacy, transparency, and how digital platforms manage consent in the age of generative artificial intelligence.
