A viral social media thread claiming that Anthropic’s Claude AI helped recover a Bitcoin wallet worth nearly $400,000 gained massive attention online on Wednesday, generating widespread debate about the role of artificial intelligence in password recovery and digital forensics. The claims were shared by a pseudonymous X user identified as “Cprkrn,” who stated that Claude assisted in regaining access to a wallet containing 5 BTC that had reportedly remained inaccessible for almost nine years. The story quickly spread across X, attracting more than six million views as users discussed whether large language models could meaningfully contribute to encrypted file analysis and forgotten password recovery processes.
According to screenshots and posts shared online, the wallet in question had not shown blockchain activity since 2015. Reports indicated that the wallet beginning with “14VJyS” remained dormant until activity resumed on Wednesday, fueling additional attention around the recovery claims. The user referenced an earlier post from August 2023 suggesting the wallet had been locked for years due to a forgotten password. While many social media users initially interpreted the thread as evidence that AI had somehow cracked Bitcoin encryption, the material shared online did not suggest any bypass of Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections. Instead, the posts appeared to show Claude assisting with file organization, historical data analysis, and identifying potentially relevant wallet related information from old digital archives.
Cprkrn explained that previous recovery attempts involved established password recovery and cryptographic testing tools such as btcrecover and Hashcat, both commonly used for analyzing encrypted wallet data and testing password combinations. The user claimed the breakthrough happened after uploading files from an old college computer into Claude, allowing the AI system to identify a wallet related file connected to a mnemonic phrase written in a notebook. In one of the posts, the user stated that Claude discovered “an OLD wallet file that the pneumonic successfully decrypted,” while also noting that the final password turned out to be “the most obvious opening ever.” The user further claimed the wallet had remained inaccessible for more than 11 years after the password was changed while intoxicated, adding another layer of internet fascination to the story.
The incident prompted mixed reactions from cybersecurity professionals and cryptocurrency recovery experts, many of whom questioned how much direct credit should be assigned to Claude itself. One expert speaking to Decrypt reportedly explained that the AI’s contribution likely involved sorting, analyzing, and organizing large volumes of historical files rather than performing any direct password cracking or cryptographic bypass. The expert described the process as more aligned with digital forensics support than a technical breakthrough in encryption recovery. Skepticism also emerged across Reddit discussions, where several users argued that the viral thread overstated Claude’s involvement. One Reddit commenter claimed the AI “didn’t do anything other than search his files,” suggesting that the story reflected how many consumers increasingly view AI systems as practical digital assistants capable of simplifying time consuming technical tasks. The timing of the story also coincides with growing public attention surrounding Anthropic’s Claude platform following the company’s release of its Claude Mythos model, which was promoted for its ability to identify software vulnerabilities and autonomously complete advanced security related tasks.
