WEF Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 Highlights Rising Operational Cyber Risks

Published:

The World Economic Forum Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026, developed in collaboration with Accenture and informed by insights from organizations across critical infrastructure sectors, including Engro Group, highlights the increasing importance of cyber risk at both operational and boardroom levels. Drawing from experiences at Engro and Accenture, the report emphasizes the growing exposure of operational technology and industrial environments, where legacy systems, supply chain dependencies, and limited IT–OT visibility can amplify the real-world consequences of cyber incidents. It points to the necessity for organizations to adopt a collaborative approach to building cyber resilience, engaging industries, ecosystems, and leadership teams simultaneously.

According to the report, cyber risk has become systemic. Rapid AI adoption, geopolitical fragmentation, and a surge in cyber-enabled fraud are reshaping the global risk landscape more quickly than many organizations can adapt. This shift has elevated cybersecurity from a purely technical concern to a strategic priority that demands attention at the executive and board levels. Operational environments, in particular, face heightened threats as interconnected systems, aging infrastructure, and complex supply chains create vulnerabilities that require coordinated mitigation efforts.

The Global Cybersecurity Outlook draws on insights from over 800 business leaders across 92 countries, providing a comprehensive view of emerging trends, risk drivers, and resilience strategies. The report stresses that organizations must treat cyber resilience as a critical component of economic and societal stability. Engro Group’s contribution to the report reflects the practical experience of operating within industrial sectors where operational technology interfaces with broader digital ecosystems. Their involvement demonstrates the value of industry-specific insights in shaping actionable guidance for leaders navigating the most consequential cybersecurity shifts.

Engro’s participation reinforces the message that effective cybersecurity requires proactive collaboration, continuous monitoring, and integration of security measures into broader operational and strategic frameworks. As global cyber threats continue to evolve, leaders are urged to prioritize investments in robust IT–OT visibility, supply chain security, and adaptive response mechanisms. The report provides insights and recommendations to help organizations not only defend against current threats but also anticipate future vulnerabilities in increasingly digitized and interconnected operational landscapes. By highlighting these systemic challenges, the WEF Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 establishes a roadmap for organizations to strengthen resilience, safeguard critical infrastructure, and sustain trust in digital operations worldwide.
