Pakistan takes a major leap towards a paperless future with the implementation of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology by the Electronic Certification Accreditation Council (ECAC). This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication (MoIT&T), aims to revolutionize digital transactions by promoting secure online interactions.
PKI acts as the backbone for secure digital interactions, facilitating the use of electronic signatures and digital certificates. These digital tools offer a level of security comparable to traditional handwritten signatures, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of online documents and transactions.
ECAC: Championing Digital Transformation
Established under the Electronic Transactions Ordinance (ETO) 2002, ECAC plays a vital role in fostering trust in the digital landscape. As the sole authorized body for paperless transactions, ECAC spearheads the legal framework that recognizes advanced electronic signatures as legally equivalent to traditional signatures.
Inauguration Marks a New Era
On December 7th, 2022, ECAC marked a significant milestone with the inauguration ceremony of the first National Root CA PKI system. This event served not only to officially launch the system but also to raise awareness about PKI’s importance for robust cybersecurity and its contribution to the government’s ambitious “Digital Pakistan” vision.Attendees from diverse sectors, including academics, researchers, industry professionals, government officials, private institutions, law enforcement agencies, the banking sector, and the business community, gathered to witness this transformative step.
A Secure and Efficient Future
The successful launch of the national PKI system by ECAC signifies a major stride towards a more secure and efficient digital ecosystem in Pakistan.
