OpenAI has announced a temporary reduction in developer pricing for its flagship GPT 5.6 Sol artificial intelligence model, lowering costs by more than 20 percent for the next three months as competition continues to grow from Anthropic and several Chinese AI companies. The promotional pricing became available through the OpenAI API following the company’s announcement on August 21 and is also being introduced to eligible plans for ChatGPT Work and Codex credits. The company clarified that the pricing adjustment only applies to developer and credit based usage, while subscription fees for ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business users remain unchanged.
Under the revised pricing structure, GPT 5.6 Sol now costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens for standard short context API usage. Before the update, developers paid $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens. The latest pricing represents a 20 percent reduction in input token costs and an approximately 33 percent decrease in output token pricing. OpenAI said the revised rates are part of a limited promotional offer that will remain in effect for the next three months. The company has not announced any changes beyond this promotional period, indicating that the adjustment is currently intended as a temporary measure for developers and organizations using the API or credit based services.
The latest reduction follows another round of pricing changes introduced in late July as OpenAI continued adjusting the cost of its AI models. During that update, the company reduced the pricing of GPT 5.6 Terra by 20 percent while making a much larger reduction of 80 percent for GPT 5.6 Luna, its lower priced model. With the new promotional rates, GPT 5.6 Sol has become less expensive than comparable frontier AI models offered by Anthropic based on publicly listed token pricing. Anthropic currently lists Claude Fable 5 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, while Claude Opus 5 is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. The comparison highlights how OpenAI has adjusted pricing across its flagship model while maintaining its existing subscription plans for consumer users.
The temporary pricing update reflects OpenAI’s continued efforts to position its AI services in a highly competitive market where companies are introducing new models and revising pricing strategies on a regular basis. By lowering API costs for GPT 5.6 Sol, the company is providing developers with reduced expenses for building and running AI powered applications during the promotional period. OpenAI has confirmed that the revised pricing applies only to eligible developer and credit based services and has not announced any changes for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business subscriptions. The company also stated that the promotional pricing for GPT 5.6 Sol is scheduled to remain available for three months, after which future pricing decisions have not yet been disclosed.
