SAP Pakistan Seeks Relief from Import Curbs, Criticizes Internet Shutdown

German tech giant SAP has urged the Pakistani government to address challenges arising from restrictions on opening Letters of Credit (LCs), citing a negative impact on their business operations.

Saquib Ahmad, SAP Managing Director for Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan, highlighted the company’s successful collaboration with the government on digital transformation projects in the public sector. These initiatives have improved service delivery for citizens.

However, Ahmad identified the government’s ban on LCs for imports as a major hurdle to SAP’s growth. He further acknowledged the broader economic and financial challenges faced by private sector companies in Pakistan, with everyone awaiting positive news from the IMF.

He expressed concern about the recent internet service disruptions following political unrest, stating: “We are talking about digital transformation, yet just recently internet services were limited.” Ahmad questioned how Pakistan’s IT sector can meet international commitments with such disruptions.

On a positive note, Ahmad highlighted SAP’s role in facilitating a unified platform for the Accountant General of Pakistan Revenue (AGPR)’s financial transactions through a micropayment gateway. This system streamlines payment procedures for pensioners, vendors, and contractors.

Integration with various entities like the Central Directorate of National Savings, State Bank of Pakistan, and NADRA has created a unified system for AGPR, ensuring accurate data reporting. Technological advancements have also enabled automated pension disbursements to over 1.2 million pensioners, streamlined through NADRA verification.

Beyond the AGPR, Ahmad mentioned ongoing projects to transform and digitalize Pakistan Railways, leading to operational improvements and increased profitability. He also revealed plans for free training initiatives for students and professionals through SAP’s partner network. Universities across Pakistan are involved in this program, providing beneficiaries with practical training and potential employment opportunities with leading organizations.
