Pakistan State Oil (PSO) hosted a two-day workshop titled “Leadership in the Age of AI” at its headquarters in Karachi, bringing together its leadership team to explore the practical applications of artificial intelligence in business operations and decision-making. The workshop focused on moving beyond discussions surrounding AI trends and examining how emerging technologies can deliver measurable value across enterprise environments. Covering topics ranging from Large Language Models (LLMs) to agentic workflows and international energy industry case studies, the sessions examined how organizations can identify suitable AI applications and integrate them into their existing operations. The programme also explored the potential impact of artificial intelligence on retail and operational functions, particularly where technology adoption can contribute to business performance and financial outcomes. Through a combination of technical discussions, practical exercises and strategic planning, the workshop aimed to help PSO’s leadership understand how AI can be applied to address real organizational challenges rather than remaining limited to theoretical discussions.
The sessions began with an exploration of LLM fundamentals, providing participants with an understanding of the technology behind modern AI-powered tools and their potential applications in enterprise settings. Discussions also examined agentic workflows, including the challenges that can arise when AI systems are designed to perform tasks through multiple steps, make decisions or interact with different tools. Understanding why these workflows can break down was an important part of the programme, as businesses increasingly explore more advanced AI applications beyond basic question-and-answer systems. The workshop further incorporated international case studies from the energy sector, highlighting examples of where artificial intelligence can contribute to measurable business outcomes. Particular attention was given to retail and operational activities, where AI-based applications can help organizations examine processes, identify efficiencies and improve decision-making. By connecting technical concepts with examples from the international energy industry, the sessions provided participants with a business-oriented perspective on the opportunities and limitations associated with enterprise AI adoption.
A significant part of the workshop involved practical activities using Alfrada OS, allowing participants to work directly with the platform and explore potential applications within PSO’s operational environment. Rather than limiting the programme to presentations, teams were encouraged to identify live operational challenges, develop and test their hypotheses, and translate their findings into actionable strategies. Participants worked through different business scenarios, assessed how AI could address specific requirements and presented their proposed approaches during the sessions. These exercises were designed to connect AI capabilities with practical organizational needs, giving teams an opportunity to evaluate potential solutions before considering their wider implementation. The presentations also encouraged collaboration and discussion among participants, with the sessions featuring moments of appreciation and lighter interactions alongside the technical work. This hands-on approach allowed the leadership team to engage with the technology in a practical setting while considering how AI-driven strategies could be adapted to their respective business functions. The use of Alfrada OS also provided an opportunity to explore how an AI platform could support the process of identifying challenges, testing ideas and developing strategies around operational requirements.
The workshop organizers expressed appreciation for the participation and engagement of PSO’s leadership team, noting the preparation and active involvement demonstrated throughout the two-day programme. The sessions concluded with a focus on identifying areas where artificial intelligence could be deployed to generate measurable business value, rather than adopting technology simply because of growing industry interest. For organizations in the energy sector, practical AI adoption can involve examining retail operations, improving internal processes and supporting more informed business decisions. The workshop highlighted the importance of combining an understanding of AI technologies with clear business objectives, operational knowledge and structured implementation strategies. PSO’s participation reflects the growing interest among established enterprises in exploring how AI can contribute to their digital transformation efforts. By bringing together technical learning, international industry examples and hands-on strategy development, the Leadership in the Age of AI workshop provided a platform for discussing how enterprise AI can move from experimentation towards practical business applications. The initiative also reinforced the importance of leadership involvement in identifying opportunities, evaluating potential outcomes and supporting the adoption of AI across organizational operations.
