Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ahmad Farooq, urged his countrymen to leverage the vast opportunities in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan. Farooq spoke at a seminar titled “Saudi-Pak Connect Gateway to Trade 2024” and emphasized the need for Pakistan to actively participate in Saudi Arabia’s ambitious economic development program.
“Saudi Arabia is offering a golden opportunity for Pakistan,” Farooq said via video link. “Vision 2030 seeks to reduce their dependence on foreign manpower, particularly in IT and construction. Pakistan has a skilled workforce, and with proper training, we can fulfill this need.”
The Ambassador highlighted the potential in the construction sector, where Saudi Arabia’s investments exceed $1 trillion. He pointed to the recent visit of a delegation of 32 Saudi companies to Pakistan as a positive step.
Engineer Naeem Khanani, the program organizer, echoed Farooq’s sentiment. “There’s a lot on the table for Pakistan in construction, IT, and other sectors,” he said. “Saudi Arabia is ready to partner with Pakistan, but we need to take the initiative.”
Farooq acknowledged the 2.5 million Pakistani workers already in Saudi Arabia but stated the need for improved training. “We’re focusing on skill development programs to enhance their capabilities,” he said, “which will ultimately lead to higher remittances being sent back home.”
Business leaders in attendance stressed the importance of government support. Zubair Motiwala, chairman of T-Dep, urged the government to facilitate increased rice exports to Saudi Arabia, while former Federal Minister Ashfaq Tola advocated prioritizing training for accountants, a skill in high demand under Vision 2030.
The seminar concluded with a positive outlook on strengthening Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations. Hassan Bakshi, former chairman of Abad, announced a delegation visit to Saudi Arabia soon to explore business and employment opportunities.
The seminar highlighted the immense potential for Pakistan to benefit from Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation. However, concerted efforts from both the government and private sector are crucial to ensure Pakistan capitalizes on this golden opportunity.
