The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is accelerating its digital transformation journey through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This collaboration will empower the government to explore and leverage cloud technology, aiming for increased efficiency, reliability, and security at a lower cost.
The MoU paves the way for a multi-pronged approach. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB) will work alongside government agencies and AWS to identify pilot workloads that can benefit most from cloud-based solutions. This process will involve educating agencies about the advantages and potential of cloud computing.
Through AWS, the government will gain access to a vast array of services, including analytics, computing, databases, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, storage, and more. This robust infrastructure and unparalleled security capabilities offer a significant leap forward.
Furthermore, the initiative fosters innovation within the KP government, enabling agencies to develop and deliver new services to citizens more rapidly and cost-effectively.
“Cloud services will empower KPITB and other government departments to bolster their existing IT infrastructure,” said Atif Khan, Minister for Science and Technology and Information Technology of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “This provides a secure and sustainable long-term solution for data management.”
This MoU with AWS aligns with the broader vision of modernizing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and enhancing service delivery for citizens. As Pakistan’s economy, and indeed the global landscape, embraces digitalization, a skilled workforce equipped for the cloud is crucial. A recent AlphaBeta analysis highlights cloud computing and cybersecurity as the most in-demand digital skills by 2025.
Recognizing this need, AWS and KPITB will collaborate on developing training programs to upskill government employees and deepen their understanding of cloud technologies. This initiative aims to accelerate innovation within the government.
These training programs will equip government personnel with the knowledge and expertise to implement cloud technologies on a large scale. The training will also enhance data-driven decision-making and empower the development of new services that ultimately lead to better outcomes for residents.
Looking beyond the government itself, the KP government and AWS will explore ways to equip underemployed and unemployed individuals in Pakistan with the skills needed for cloud careers. This could involve leveraging AWS re/Start, a 12-week intensive skills development program.
Through classroom-based training and practical labs simulating real-world scenarios, participants can acquire the technical skills necessary for entry-to-mid-level cloud positions. AWS re/Start also provides professional skills training to prepare participants for job interviews.
“This MoU aligns perfectly with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government’s digital policy 2018,” stated Dr. Ali Mahmud, Managing Director of KPITB. “It emphasizes utilizing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for job creation, improved connectivity, citizen empowerment, and inclusive economic growth.”
The partnership with AWS empowers government teams with the tools and know-how to drive innovation. Mr. Eric Conrad, Worldwide Public Sector Regional Managing Director of ASEAN at AWS said,
“We are thrilled to collaborate with KPITB. This marks our first official engagement with a government agency in Pakistan, and we are committed to supporting transformative innovation for the country.”
This MoU provides a critical platform for KPITB to evaluate the potential of cloud technology and equip its personnel with the digital skills needed to unlock innovation. Ultimately, this empowers KPITB to focus on its core mission of leveraging technology to drive economic growth.
