IT Exports Show Modest 2.9% Growth in First 4 Months of FY23

Pakistan’s IT and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) sector is experiencing growth, with export remittances reaching $854 million during the first four months of the current fiscal year (July-October 2022-23). This represents a 2.89% increase compared to the same period last year.

October 2022 saw a particularly strong performance, with ITeS exports reaching $221 million, a 13.33% jump year-over-year. This positive trend is further reflected in net exports, which climbed 14.44% to $721 million compared to the previous year.

The government remains optimistic about achieving its ambitious target of $5 billion in IT exports by June 2023. Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunication Syed Aminul Haque has emphasized ongoing efforts to support long-term industry growth and export expansion.

However, challenges persist. The Ministry has expressed concerns that a lack of policy consistency, unresolved tax issues, and unimplemented incentive programs could hinder the telecom sector’s export potential and jeopardize the nation’s digital vision.

Earlier in the fiscal year, a 0.3% decline in ITeS exports during the first quarter (July-September 2022) raised alarm bells. Minister Haque has actively addressed these concerns with various stakeholders, including the Prime Minister, highlighting the need for immediate action to prevent further decline. Resolving outstanding taxation and banking issues remains a key priority for the sector’s continued success.
