The Islamabad Safe City Authority’s online system was compromised in a recent hacking attempt, forcing a shutdown of critical software and applications. Police sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed the attack occurred two days prior and targeted the system’s main server.

This server contained sensitive data, including criminal records. The breach prompted immediate action, shutting down several key systems, including the Complaint Management System, Criminal Management Record System, Human Resources Management System, and software used by the Operations Division.

While the system’s firewall successfully detected the intrusion, a lack of backup servers and outdated software with expired licenses left authorities with no choice but to shut down the affected applications.

Sources further revealed weaknesses in login security. Officials reportedly used simple and common login credentials, making the system vulnerable to unauthorized access.

The compromised online system is separate from the Safe City camera management system, which operates independently and remains secure. However, various functionalities, including records from smart police vehicles, police stations, video analytics, and traffic data, are linked to the compromised servers.

Police spokesperson Taqi Jawad confirmed the hacking attempt and the precautionary shutdown of logins. He stated that login credentials for police stations, officers of all ranks, and senior officials are being changed.

Efforts to reach SSP Shoaib Khan, head of the Safe City Islamabad Authority, for further comment were unsuccessful.
