Google has introduced a new account recovery option that allows users to regain access to their accounts using a selfie video, expanding the authentication methods available beyond email addresses and phone numbers. Announced on Thursday, the new feature is designed to help users who become locked out of their accounts or lose access to their trusted devices. The selfie video method is entirely optional and provides an additional layer of identity verification by using facial recognition technology to confirm that the person attempting to recover the account is its legitimate owner. The feature reflects Google’s continued efforts to strengthen account security while giving users more flexibility during the recovery process.
To enable the feature, users must first set up a selfie video through their Google Account by looking into their device’s camera and completing a series of short guided head movements. The captured video records the user’s face from multiple angles and is securely stored for future verification. If a user later loses access to their account, they can record another selfie video during the recovery process. Google will compare the newly recorded video with the one previously saved to verify the user’s identity before restoring access. According to the company, users remain in full control of this feature, which is completely opt in and can be removed from their account settings at any time. Google also stated that users cannot enroll in selfie video verification while they are already locked out of their accounts or actively going through the account recovery process, making advance enrollment a requirement for using this recovery method.
Google explained that the selfie video system serves multiple purposes beyond account recovery. In addition to helping users regain access to their accounts, it can also be used to unlock certain Google features or services when identity verification is required to confirm that a user is genuine and has not violated platform policies. The company also noted that the technology will support users who want to create AI generated content that looks and sounds like themselves by enabling avatar creation. However, the feature is currently unavailable for Google Workspace accounts, Child accounts, and Google Accounts protected under the Advanced Protection Program. Google advised users to update their stored selfie video if their facial appearance changes significantly over time to ensure successful identity verification during future recovery attempts. The company added that selfie videos are stored in encrypted form and are only used for account verification unless users voluntarily choose to allow the data to help improve Google’s facial recognition, age estimation, and other verification technologies. Users can manage this optional setting through the Selfie Video section of their Google Account.
Alongside the new account recovery feature, Google Cloud Fraud Defense has also introduced a hand gesture verification system for reCAPTCHA that replaces traditional image based challenges with camera assisted liveness detection. The system asks users to perform simple hand movements while their device camera is active, allowing Google’s technology to capture hand landmark data consisting of 21 hand knuckle coordinates to distinguish real users from automated bots. Google emphasized that videos captured during this verification process are never associated with a user’s identity and are permanently deleted once verification is complete. According to the company, no images or videos of hand gestures are retained after the authentication process, and the collected data is not used for any purpose beyond verification. Together, these new identity verification technologies demonstrate Google’s continued investment in modern authentication methods that combine biometrics, AI, and liveness detection to improve both account security and protection against automated fraud.
