Commtel has announced its role as the lead implementation partner alongside Huawei for the Higher Education Commission Pakistan’s National Identity and Access Management IAM project, marking one of the most significant digital transformation initiatives in the country’s higher education sector. The project is designed to establish a unified digital identity framework that supports secure, scalable, and future ready access across academic institutions nationwide. It represents a structured move toward building a cohesive digital ecosystem for students, faculty, and researchers across Pakistan.
The National IAM project is being positioned as a foundational step in modernizing digital access within the education sector by introducing advanced Single Sign On technology. This system enables users to access multiple academic platforms through a single verified digital identity, reducing the need for multiple logins while improving security and usability. The initiative aims to streamline access to key academic resources including global research journals, learning management systems, academic cloud services, high performance computing environments, and collaborative research platforms. The integration of these services is expected to enhance efficiency and accessibility across institutions while supporting a more connected academic environment.
A key aspect of the project is its focus on international academic connectivity. Through integration with global research and education federations such as eduGAIN, the platform will enable Pakistani researchers and students to collaborate with international academic networks more effectively. This global integration is intended to strengthen research collaboration opportunities and expand access to knowledge resources beyond national boundaries. At the core of the system is a robust authentication and trust framework designed to safeguard national intellectual capital while ensuring secure and controlled access to sensitive academic data.
As implementation partner, Commtel is working alongside Huawei and the Higher Education Commission to execute a phased rollout of the system across Pakistan’s higher education institutions. The initiative is designed to improve user experience for millions of students and educators by simplifying access to digital platforms and ensuring consistent security standards across the ecosystem. The deployment strategy focuses on creating a seamless and integrated digital infrastructure that supports both academic advancement and operational efficiency within institutions.
The project also emphasizes long term transformation of the academic environment by enabling more accessible, secure, and collaborative digital learning systems. By unifying identity management across institutions, the initiative seeks to reduce fragmentation in access systems and create a standardized framework for digital engagement. This approach is expected to support innovation in teaching, research, and administrative processes while strengthening the overall digital backbone of the education sector.
Commtel’s involvement in the National IAM project reflects its commitment to advancing digital transformation in Pakistan’s public sector technology landscape. The company has expressed its dedication to ensuring that the system delivers measurable improvements in security, usability, and academic collaboration. With participation from key stakeholders and leadership teams including Asher Faisel Khan, Ahmer Faisel Khan, Ziyad Mehtab, Saad Alam, Noor Ul An Khan, Mohsin Kiani, Sadia Sialvi, Hassaan Tarin, PMP, and Shoaib Rauf, the initiative continues to move forward as a coordinated effort to redefine digital identity infrastructure in higher education.
