Aga Khan University Hospital is revolutionizing healthcare access with the launch of its home care services, offering patients the convenience of receiving medical attention in the comfort of their own homes. Rolled out on February 15, 2024, these services provide a flexible and quality healthcare solution for patients and caregivers alike.
In a recent episode of Citizen Digital’s Trailblazers show, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi CEO Rashid Khalani shed light on the significance of the home care service for patients. Khalani emphasized that the initiative, which originated as a pilot program in 2022, aims to ensure that oncology patients, individuals in palliative care, and those with chronic illnesses receive uninterrupted healthcare without the inconvenience of hospital visits.
The inspiration behind the project stemmed from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, during which hospitals experienced a decline in patient visits due to fear of infection. Khalani emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals continue to prioritize their healthcare, even during challenging times, by providing accessible home-based medical services.
With a focus on maintaining quality healthcare standards, Aga Khan University Hospital will extend its services to educate home caregivers on best practices and ensure continuity of care. The hospital’s electronic systems facilitate seamless access to patient records, enabling healthcare providers to deliver consistent and efficient care during home visits.
Currently available in Nairobi, Aga Khan University Hospital plans to expand its home care services to other regions of the country. Patients, both new and existing, can benefit from a range of services, including nursing care, nutrition support, physiotherapy, home medication, and laboratory tests, all accessible through the convenience of their smartphones.
