WhatsApp Begins Username Reservations to Strengthen Privacy and Reduce Phone Number Sharing

Published:

WhatsApp has officially announced the beginning of global username reservations, introducing a new privacy focused feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. The optional functionality is designed to provide greater control over personal information for the platform’s more than three billion users. According to the company, the rollout of username reservations starts today, giving eligible users the opportunity to create and reserve a unique username before the feature becomes widely available later this year. The move reflects WhatsApp’s continued efforts to strengthen user privacy while making it easier for people to communicate without exposing their phone numbers during initial interactions.

Meta owned WhatsApp said users will be able to choose their own unique username, and it does not have to match their identity or handle on any other platform. Unlike traditional social media services, the company emphasized that usernames are intended as a privacy feature rather than a public identity. There will be no searchable directory, username suggestions, or public discovery system, meaning someone must already know a user’s exact username before they can initiate contact for the first time. To simplify the selection process, WhatsApp will also introduce a username generator that can help users find an available option if their preferred choice has already been taken. The company believes this approach will help users maintain greater privacy while still allowing convenient communication with friends, family, businesses, and other contacts.

In addition to usernames, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key that provides another layer of protection for users who want tighter control over incoming messages. According to a Meta spokesperson, the username key requires anyone attempting to contact a user for the first time through their username to know both the exact username and the associated key. This added verification is designed to reduce unwanted messages and give users greater authority over who can reach them. If a user decides to change who can contact them, the username key can be reset at any time, immediately preventing new incoming conversations that rely on the previous key. The company also noted that creators, small businesses, and organizations looking to maintain consistent branding across different platforms will have the option to claim the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, helping establish a unified online presence while benefiting from WhatsApp’s new privacy protections.

One of the most significant advantages of the feature is that once usernames are enabled, other users will no longer be able to view or access a person’s phone number during interactions initiated through a username. This provides an additional privacy safeguard for individuals who prefer not to share their personal contact details while still remaining reachable on the messaging platform. Users can reserve a username by navigating to Settings, then Account, followed by Username within the WhatsApp application. WhatsApp said the feature will be introduced gradually over the coming months and users will receive a notification within the app once username reservations become available in their country. The announcement comes more than two years after Signal introduced a similar username system aimed at protecting phone numbers, highlighting a broader industry trend toward giving users stronger privacy controls while maintaining seamless communication experiences.
