Honored to join the United Nations Secretary General’s High-Level Advisory Body on AI, I am thrilled to collaborate with esteemed figures worldwide. The focus is set on addressing a pivotal concern of our era: the global governance of artificial intelligence.
Anticipated by year-end, the AI Advisory Body’s interim recommendations will encompass three key areas:
1. International governance of artificial intelligence
2. Shared understanding of risks and challenges
3. Identifying opportunities to leverage AI for accelerating Sustainable Development Goals
The approach involves a balanced exploration of AI risks, opportunities, and international governance, fostering common understanding, pinpointing gaps, and prioritizing actions. This comprehensive strategy aims to guide governments and the private sector in responding effectively to the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
Recognizing the uniqueness of AI, the Advisory Body draws insights from past experiences while acknowledging the need for a tailored approach. Urgency is paramount, with the goal of providing Member States with a thorough expert analysis of potential options for international AI governance within the next year. The ultimate decision on the scope of an AI governance mechanism rests with Member States, and our role is to support the Secretary-General and Member States in this crucial task.
In the weeks ahead, I look forward to engaging with friends and colleagues actively working on this subject.
