PIMS Reports Major Progress With One Patient One ID Digital Health System

Published:

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has reported substantial advancements in its digital health operations following the rollout of the One Patient, One ID system, an initiative designed to improve patient care and hospital management. Over five months, the program has registered 813,361 patients, each assigned a unique digital identity linked to their CNIC, serving as a permanent medical record number. This system allows complete tracking of patients’ medical history, ensuring continuity of care across departments and reducing the likelihood of duplicate tests.

Since implementation, the system has documented 1.5 million laboratory tests and 220,067 radiology tests, reflecting comprehensive recording of patient diagnostics. Emergency services have also benefited, with 387,610 patients registered at emergency counters, highlighting the system’s role in enhancing urgent care efficiency. Daily outpatient visits have risen from 5,000 to 7,500 patients, and emergency visits have increased by 2,500 per day, demonstrating improved patient flow and operational capacity.

The initiative has also strengthened inpatient management, registering 29,677 admissions during the rollout period. Over 2,000 PIMS staff members were trained to ensure effective adoption and smooth integration across departments, which has reduced waiting times for medical reports to three to four hours. Authorities emphasized that this optimization contributes directly to an improved patient experience while supporting hospital workflow and resource allocation.

Officials noted that the One Patient, One ID system forms a foundation for future telemedicine services and supports public health planning by providing reliable, centralized patient data. The digital health framework allows authorized healthcare providers to access patient records across hospitals, promoting better treatment continuity and informed medical decision-making. Authorities highlighted that the initiative is aligned with broader healthcare modernization goals, aiming to enhance service quality, patient care efficiency, and policy planning through data-driven insights.

The success of the program illustrates the impact of digital systems in large hospital environments, where managing patient data efficiently is critical to operational performance. By integrating medical records with unique digital identities, PIMS aims to reduce administrative bottlenecks, improve diagnostic accuracy, and provide patients with a seamless experience. The system is seen as a stepping stone toward expanding digital health initiatives nationwide, supporting both clinical and public health objectives while preparing for a future of more connected and responsive healthcare services.
