The Pakistani government is set to introduce its first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy in early 2025, with a primary focus on bolstering cybersecurity. This strategic move aims to proactively detect and respond to cyber threats, safeguarding critical infrastructure and sensitive data.
The AI policy is expected to play a crucial role in realizing the government’s vision of a “Digital Pakistan.” By leveraging AI-powered solutions, the country aims to improve its cybersecurity ranking and enhance its digital economy.
Syed Junaid Imam, Member IT at the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, highlighted the importance of AI in ensuring cybersecurity. He emphasized that Pakistan’s recent advancement to the top 40 in the Global Cybersecurity Index is a significant step, but more needs to be done to secure the nation’s digital landscape.
The government is actively working to strengthen digital infrastructure, including the establishment of a national CERT and sectoral CERTs. These initiatives will facilitate information sharing and coordinated response to cyber threats.
Industry experts also emphasized the growing threat of cyberattacks and the need for robust cybersecurity measures. Asad Effendi, Founder & CEO of Secure Networks, highlighted the potential of AI in real-time threat detection and response. Ammar Jaffri, Former Additional DG of the FIA, stressed the importance of collaboration and information sharing among stakeholders.
By embracing AI and investing in cybersecurity, Pakistan aims to create a secure and thriving digital economy.
