Pakistan Ports to Implement AI System for Smarter, Transparent Operations

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced a major milestone in the modernization of Pakistan’s port operations, with the integration of Artificial Intelligence set to begin on August 14. Speaking during the National Assembly’s question-hour, Chaudhry highlighted that the move is part of a broader push towards digitalization, transparency, and operational innovation. He dismissed claims of inefficiency, clarifying that ports serve as facilitators of cargo movement rather than producers of industrial output. According to him, the performance of ports is directly linked to the country’s industrial activity and trade volume, and despite various challenges, Pakistan’s ports generated a record Rs 109.7 billion in profit, underscoring their resilience and potential.

Chaudhry outlined that the Ministry for Maritime Affairs will become the first federal ministry to integrate AI at the operational level through the introduction of the Artificial Intelligence-based Maritime System (AIMS). He noted that the Prime Minister’s policy framework on AI has provided the necessary foundation for these advancements, enabling the ministry to take the lead in driving efficiency, transparency, and future-readiness in the maritime sector. He also stressed that ongoing reforms are aimed at eliminating bottlenecks and streamlining processes, making the ports more competitive in the regional and global market.

The minister further detailed the implementation of the Port Community System and Pakistan Single Window to address long-standing concerns around customs delays, leakages, and operational inefficiencies. These systems, he said, will work in tandem to create a unified platform for cargo handling, customs clearance, and documentation, significantly reducing turnaround times and operational costs. He assured that close coordination with the Federal Board of Revenue and Pakistan Customs is being maintained to enhance control mechanisms, strengthen anti-theft measures, and ensure smooth policy implementation. Chaudhry emphasized that his ministry is not only following guidance from relevant authorities but also providing active support to them in addressing systemic challenges.

In addition to these reforms, Chaudhry welcomed input from parliamentarians on improving the maritime sector, particularly in the area of the bunkering system. He confirmed that work is underway on a bunkering policy aimed at attracting international participation and investment in Pakistan’s maritime fuel supply chain. He expressed confidence that these measures will boost trade facilitation, encourage foreign investment, and enhance Pakistan’s standing in global maritime logistics. Concluding his remarks, he reiterated the ministry’s commitment to accountability, modernization, and sustained progress, noting the positive feedback received from parliamentarians on the progress achieved in recent months.
