PTA has revealed a significant increase in cyberattacks targeting Pakistan’s digital infrastructure in 2023. The report highlights a range of threats, including phishing, malware, DDoS attacks, ransomware, and insider threats.
The telecom sector emerged as a prime target, facing 720 malware attacks alone. Additionally, the digital sector experienced 550 phishing attacks, 300 DDoS incidents, 200 ransomware attacks, and 150 insider threats. These alarming figures underscore the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect Pakistan’s critical infrastructure and safeguard sensitive data.
The report also highlights the increasing threat posed by advanced persistent threat (APT) groups, such as Gamaredon, Donot, Sidewinder, and Lazarus. These sophisticated adversaries target high-value sectors like government organizations, internet infrastructure, and healthcare entities. Their attacks are often motivated by geopolitical factors and aim to steal sensitive information or disrupt critical services.
PTA’s report serves as a wake-up call for Pakistan to bolster its cybersecurity defenses. By implementing stronger security measures, raising awareness, and fostering international collaboration, the country can mitigate the risks associated with cyberattacks and protect its digital future.
