National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT) has issued a cybersecurity advisory to raise awareness about the growing threat of cyber-attacks targeting WhatsApp users in Pakistan.

Given the widespread use of WhatsApp for both personal and professional communications, it has become a prime target for cybercriminals employing sophisticated techniques such as phishing and social engineering. To protect against these threats, nCERT has outlined several essential security measures.

The advisory emphasizes the importance of strong passwords. Users are urged to avoid easily guessable combinations and opt for complex passwords that include a mix of characters, numbers, and symbols. Additionally, enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a PIN code in addition to the password.

Regular verification of WhatsApp security codes for individual contacts is another crucial step. These codes ensure the secure encryption of messages, preventing unauthorized access.

For advanced security, nCERT recommends using biometrics to lock WhatsApp and avoiding public Wi-Fi networks without a VPN. Monitoring account activity for any unauthorized device connections is also essential.

To further protect their accounts, users should configure privacy settings to limit who can view their profile details and disable cloud backups. These measures help minimize exposure to potential attackers who exploit vulnerabilities in unsecured networks and devices.

The nCERT has urged WhatsApp users to stay informed about the latest security updates and report any suspicious activity to the platform. By following these guidelines, individuals and government employees can significantly enhance their account security and protect their sensitive communications from cyber threats.
