NBP Partners With ISTIQEME To Expand QR Based Digital Payments Across Pakistan

Published:

National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has entered into a strategic partnership with ISTIQEME to expand the deployment of QR based payment solutions across Pakistan and strengthen the country’s digital payments ecosystem. The collaboration is focused on improving merchant acceptance of digital transactions through structured infrastructure rollout and operational enablement. The agreement reflects ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility of digital payment tools for businesses and consumers while supporting broader financial digitization across the banking sector. The announcement was formally made during a ceremony held at NBP’s regional office in Karachi, attended by senior leadership from both organisations, as reported on April 16, 2026 by Hassan Haq.

Under this partnership, ISTIQEME will provide end to end support for QR payment infrastructure deployment, ensuring that merchants across different regions can access standardized digital payment acceptance systems. This includes technical implementation of QR based payment solutions, account opening assistance for merchants, and structured onboarding processes designed to simplify adoption. In addition to infrastructure rollout, ISTIQEME will also conduct training programs aimed at building merchant awareness and improving operational readiness for digital transactions. These training sessions are expected to play a key role in encouraging adoption by helping businesses understand transaction flows, settlement processes, and day to day usage of QR payment systems within retail and service environments.

The partnership also includes strong operational coordination between ISTIQEME and NBP branches across the country. ISTIQEME will support branch level procedures to streamline merchant onboarding and activation, ensuring consistency and efficiency across multiple locations. This operational support framework is designed to reduce friction in onboarding workflows and enable faster integration of merchants into the digital payment ecosystem. NBP, leveraging its extensive nationwide banking network, will facilitate scale and reach, enabling the partnership to extend digital payment acceptance into both urban and semi urban markets where traditional cash based transactions remain dominant. By combining banking infrastructure with digital enablement expertise, both organisations aim to accelerate the transition toward more structured electronic payment usage.

Officials associated with the initiative highlighted that the collaboration aligns with broader national objectives to increase financial inclusion and strengthen digital transaction adoption across Pakistan. The project is positioned within ongoing efforts supported by State Bank of Pakistan to promote a cashless economy and improve access to formal financial services. By introducing QR based payment systems at merchant level, the initiative aims to provide more convenient, transparent, and traceable transaction methods for consumers and businesses. It also supports the development of a more integrated payments landscape where digital channels become increasingly central to everyday commerce. Through this partnership, NBP and ISTIQEME are working to create an environment where digital payments become more accessible, widely accepted, and operationally efficient across diverse market segments in Pakistan’s financial ecosystem.
