Microsoft Extends Free Windows 10 ESU Support Until October 2027

Published:

Microsoft has quietly extended its free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for personal users, giving eligible devices security update coverage until October 12, 2027. The extension was not introduced through a major announcement but instead appeared in updates to Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU documentation and as an editor’s note added to a Windows Experience Blog post on June 25, 2026. The move provides Windows 10 users with an additional year of security support while allowing more time to transition to Windows 11 or newer hardware.

According to the updated blog post, the Windows 10 ESU program for personal use devices will now continue through October 12, 2027. Microsoft explained that the decision is intended to help customers who require additional time before moving to a Windows 11 PC while ensuring they continue receiving critical security updates during the transition period. Windows 10 officially reached its end of support on October 14, 2025, ending regular technical support, feature updates, and security updates for standard editions of the operating system. Only Windows Long Term Servicing Channel versions continued receiving standard support beyond that date. To help users who were unable to upgrade immediately, Microsoft introduced a free Extended Security Updates program for consumers, originally scheduled to expire on October 12, 2026. Enterprise customers were also offered an ESU program lasting up to three years, with pricing reaching $427 per device over the full coverage period. With the latest documentation update, Microsoft has extended the consumer program by another year without altering the existing enrollment process, giving eligible users continued protection against newly discovered security threats.

Microsoft also provided an official statement explaining the decision. The company said it recognizes that moving to a new PC can take time and that extending the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates program reflects its ongoing commitment to helping customers remain secure throughout that process. Under the revised timeline, enrolled devices will continue receiving security updates until October 12, 2027. Users can still qualify for the ESU program through several available methods. These include paying a one time fee of $30, backing up Windows settings to a Microsoft account, or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. In countries within the European Economic Area, eligible users can receive ESU coverage simply by signing in to Windows 10 using a Microsoft account. Microsoft also confirmed that a single ESU license may cover up to 10 devices linked to the same Microsoft account, and users already enrolled in the program will automatically remain protected through the newly extended end date without taking any additional action.

The company clarified that the consumer Extended Security Updates program is intended only for personal devices and is not available for systems joined to Active Directory domains, Microsoft Entra managed environments, or devices controlled through Mobile Device Management platforms. However, Microsoft Entra registered devices remain eligible for the program. The extension provides Windows 10 users with additional flexibility while Microsoft continues encouraging customers to migrate to Windows 11 or purchase newer Copilot Plus PCs. By extending free security coverage for another year, Microsoft is allowing individuals who are not yet ready to upgrade their hardware or operating system to continue receiving essential security protections while planning their transition at their own pace.
