Interest-Free E-Bikes & E-Rickshaws for Youth, Subsidized Sugar for Ramadan

Pakistani government is making a two-pronged push to address environmental concerns and empower young people. Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet recently approved a loan scheme offering zero interest financing for electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws).

This initiative has a dual purpose. Firstly, by making these eco-friendly vehicles more affordable and accessible, the government hopes to encourage a shift away from traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. This transition would lead to reduced emissions and contribute to a cleaner environment. Secondly, the interest-free loans, worth Rs 0.5 million (approximately $2,900 USD) and provided over a three-year period, aim to empower young people by offering them the financial resources to start their own transportation businesses. This can contribute to youth employment and economic independence.

The ECC approved the Prime Minister’s Youth Business & Agriculture Loan Scheme (PMYB&ALS) model for this program. The Ministry of Industries & Production will work in collaboration with PMYB&ALS to determine the specific loan application process and eligibility criteria.

In a separate decision made during the same ECC meeting, the PSMA Punjab Zone has agreed to supply 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar at a subsidized price of Rs95 per kilogram (approximately $0.44 USD) for sale to the public through the Punjab government. This measure aims to ensure sugar affordability during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. The ECC has also directed efforts to establish similar arrangements with provincial PSMAs in other areas of Pakistan.

These decisions by the Pakistani government demonstrate a multifaceted approach to promoting economic development, environmental responsibility, and youth empowerment.
