The average cost of a data breach for organizations across the Middle East has increased to $8 million in 2026 as cybercriminals increasingly use artificial intelligence to launch more sophisticated attacks, according to IBM 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report. The study found that artificial intelligence is becoming a significant factor in malicious cyber incidents across the region, while organizations that have adopted AI powered security and automation technologies are reducing the financial impact of breaches by more than $3 million on average. The findings highlight the growing economic impact of cybersecurity incidents and the increasing importance of advanced security technologies as organizations continue to expand their digital operations.
According to IBM, 26 percent of malicious data breaches in the Middle East involved artificial intelligence, while an additional 11 percent of organizations were unable to determine whether attackers had used AI during an incident. The report noted that businesses making extensive use of artificial intelligence and security automation experienced breach costs that were more than $3 million lower than those that had not implemented these technologies. Despite these benefits, nearly one quarter of surveyed organizations, representing 23 percent, had not yet adopted AI based security automation. IBM stated that the findings demonstrate how artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing both offensive and defensive cybersecurity strategies. As attackers continue to automate and accelerate their operations, organizations that invest in AI driven security capabilities are better positioned to detect threats earlier, respond more efficiently, and reduce the overall financial impact of cyber incidents.
The report also examined the financial impact of different stages of the breach lifecycle. Lost business accounted for the largest portion of breach related costs, reaching an average of $3.57 million per incident. Post breach response activities, including recovery and remediation, averaged $2.17 million, while detection and escalation costs reached approximately $1.9 million. Notification related expenses added an average of $360,000 per breach. IBM said these figures illustrate that the financial burden of a cyberattack extends well beyond the initial compromise, affecting organizations throughout detection, containment, investigation, notification, recovery, and business continuity efforts. The report also identified the financial services and technology sectors as the industries with the highest average breach costs in the region, with both recording an average of $10.67 million per incident. The industrial sector followed closely with an average breach cost of $9.6 million, reflecting the growing cybersecurity challenges facing critical industries.
Saad Toma, General Manager of IBM Middle East and Africa, said that the increasing use of artificial intelligence by cybercriminals is making attacks faster and less expensive to execute while simultaneously increasing the cost of identifying and responding to security breaches. He stated that this imbalance is changing the economics of cyber risk and reinforcing the need for organizations to strengthen their cybersecurity capabilities through AI driven detection and response technologies. According to IBM, the report demonstrates that although artificial intelligence is enabling more advanced cyberattacks, it is also providing organizations with valuable tools to improve threat detection, automate security operations, and reduce the financial consequences of cyber incidents. The findings underscore the growing importance of combining artificial intelligence with security automation as organizations across the Middle East continue to strengthen their cyber resilience against increasingly complex digital threats.
