IBM Islamabad Event Highlights AI Driven GRC And Identity Security Challenges

Published:

IBM’s recent event in Islamabad gathered cybersecurity and technology leaders for discussions centered on some of the most pressing governance, risk, compliance, and identity security challenges facing organizations today. Two panel discussions stood out for bringing together experienced practitioners from Pakistan’s banking and public sectors to examine how organizations are adapting to increasingly complex digital risks. Rather than theoretical conversations, both sessions focused on practical realities, operational constraints, and firsthand experiences from institutions responsible for managing sensitive systems, critical infrastructure, and regulated environments.

One of the featured discussions, titled “How Automation and AI are Redefining GRC Challenges,” focused on the growing role of automation and artificial intelligence in governance, risk, and compliance. The panel featured Amir Siddiqui, CISO at ABHI Microfinance Bank Ltd., Muhammad Irfan Sheikh, Director Cybersecurity at Benazir Income Support Programme, and Malik Hamza Murtaza, CISO at HBL Microfinance Bank LTD. The discussion explored how organizations are shifting from reactive compliance approaches toward governance models designed to operate continuously and intelligently. Speakers highlighted the increasing pressure on institutions to move beyond checklist driven compliance and instead build systems capable of identifying risks in real time while maintaining operational resilience. The panel also examined where artificial intelligence delivers measurable value in GRC processes, where limitations remain, and the level of organizational maturity required to successfully integrate intelligent governance mechanisms. With financial institutions and public sector entities operating in some of Pakistan’s most demanding compliance environments, the conversation reflected practical concerns rather than broad industry assumptions. Insights from professionals working directly within these regulated sectors added depth to the session, making it particularly relevant for organizations navigating digital transformation alongside heightened regulatory expectations.

Another panel discussion, “Securing Identities, Secrets & Devices in a Distributed World,” addressed the growing challenge of protecting digital ecosystems as organizational perimeters continue to evolve. The session brought together Asif Iqbal, CISO at MCB Islamic Bank Ltd., Dr. Yasir Niaz Khan, CTO at Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA), and Muhammad Ali Manzer, CISO at The Bank of Punjab, with moderation by Usman Malik, CSO at The University of Lahore. The discussion focused on the realities of securing distributed environments where identities, devices, applications, and machine driven systems interact at scale. Panelists explored how traditional security boundaries are becoming less effective in environments shaped by remote access, cloud adoption, and increasingly interconnected digital infrastructure. Particular attention was given to the rise of machine identities and the growing complexity of safeguarding credentials, secrets, and access controls in systems where automated interactions now significantly outnumber human activity. Speakers also discussed how Zero Trust strategies are being interpreted and implemented by organizations responsible for critical services and sensitive information, moving the conversation beyond theoretical frameworks into operational realities.

Together, the discussions reflected how Pakistan’s financial and public sectors are approaching cybersecurity with a greater emphasis on adaptability, intelligence, and resilience. By bringing experienced practitioners into candid discussions, the IBM Islamabad event created space for conversations grounded in operational experience, offering attendees perspectives shaped by real world implementation rather than abstract frameworks. The sessions underscored how cybersecurity leadership increasingly requires balancing technological advancement with governance, compliance, and identity protection demands that continue to evolve alongside digital transformation.
