Guarding Against Rising Cyber Threats: The Surge of QR Code Scams Revealed

Published:

Last week, Ranga Bodla, Vice President for Field Engagement and Marketing of NetSuite, hosted a panel discussion on “Generative AI and Cyber Security Essentials” at the Chicago CFO Leadership Council. The discussion, which exceeded its scheduled time, delved into the alarming world of AI-enabled cyber threats, with panelist Mishaal Khan, Cybersecurity Lead at Mindsight, revealing a particularly unsettling trend—criminals exploiting QR codes to deceive unsuspecting victims.

While QR code scams may not be as intricate as some AI crimes, their widespread use makes them an ideal tool for catching individuals off guard. The panel highlighted several common QR code scams, including one where criminals cover parking lot QR codes with stickers, redirecting users to fake websites to steal credit card information.

Other scams involve phishing emails containing QR codes, printed mail with deceptive QR codes promising free products or discounts, and even face-to-face encounters where individuals on the street request money with a phone displaying a QR code.

To protect oneself from QR code scams, cybersecurity experts recommend the following precautions:

1. Avoid Scanning QR Codes from Emails or Texts: Never scan QR codes received via email or text, as this could lead to malicious activities. It’s advisable to use a laptop for links, which adds an extra layer of security.

2. Verify Links: Before scanning a QR code, check the preview of the link that pops up. Legitimate websites typically start with “https,” while fake ones often lack the “s.” If there’s no ‘s,’ avoid scanning.

3. Inspect Public QR Codes: When encountering QR codes in public spaces, inspect them for any signs of tampering or irregularities before scanning.

4. Limit QR Code Usage: Consider refraining from scanning QR codes unless absolutely necessary. Be cautious and explore alternative methods whenever possible.

As cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, the once-ubiquitous QR code has become a potential threat. Staying vigilant and adopting safe practices can help individuals safeguard against these growing cyber risks.
