Government to Develop New Cybersecurity Framework Post Audio Leaks Incident

Published:

Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) has taken a two-pronged approach in response to recent audio leaks from the Prime Minister’s office. A high-powered committee will investigate the leak, while a comprehensive legal framework for cybersecurity is being developed.

The Ministry of Law and Justice will draft this framework, aligning it with the National Cyber Security Policy 2021. This policy outlines a multi-faceted approach to fortifying Pakistan’s cyber defenses. The upcoming legal framework, built upon this policy, will be formulated through consultations with stakeholders.

This framework is expected to encompass a national cybersecurity plan, laws to address cyber threats, and regulations for the framework’s operation. Measures for incident handling, information sharing, and compliance will also be established. The framework may propose amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 to address evolving threats.

This comprehensive legal framework, alongside the leak investigation, signifies Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its cybersecurity. By prioritizing robust cyber defenses, the country aims to safeguard critical infrastructure, protect citizen privacy, and foster a more secure digital environment.
