Google has acquired a large collection of corporate data from bankrupt Spirit Airlines for $10 million through a bankruptcy auction, according to Bloomberg Law. The purchase is intended to support the company’s artificial intelligence development efforts by providing access to a broad range of operational and business information. Google stated that the transaction does not include customer data or personally identifiable information, and that additional measures will be taken to ensure sensitive details are removed before the material is used. The data package acquired by Google contains a substantial amount of enterprise information collected during Spirit Airlines’ operations. According to the report, the purchase includes approximately 100 million emails, 500 million messages, and collaboration data from Microsoft Teams. It also contains information related to company revenue, flight operations, marketing activities, personnel records, and project management. In addition, the dataset features nearly 30 million lines of program code, software development data, software models, algorithms, and extensive pricing information covering around 7.2 billion competing flights alongside approximately 7.5 billion passenger transactions. While the volume of information is significant, Google emphasized that customer records and personally identifiable information are not part of the agreement.
To support privacy protections, Google said an independent third party will review the acquired material before it is transferred for internal use. This review process is intended to identify and remove any information that could directly or indirectly identify individuals. Once the verification process has been completed, the remaining data will be used to improve Google’s products and artificial intelligence models. The company indicated that the dataset will contribute to refining AI capabilities by providing access to large scale operational, technical, and business information without relying on personal customer records.
