Genesys, a California based customer experience and contact center technology provider, has confirmed that it contained a cyberattack involving unauthorized access to certain internal business systems. The company disclosed that the incident affected platforms used for internal operations rather than its customer facing cloud services, while its investigation into the scope of the incident remains ongoing.
The company announced that the incident was identified on October 19, revealing that unauthorized individuals gained access to internal systems, including its learning management system (LMS) and customer relationship management (CRM) environment. According to Genesys, the incident did not impact Genesys Cloud, Genesys Engage, or Genesys Engage Cloud platforms. The company emphasized that there was no unauthorized access to customer or partner environments hosted on those platforms and that data stored or processed within those services remained protected. Following the discovery, Genesys immediately activated its incident response procedures, including suspending the LMS platform as part of its containment efforts. On October 23, the company confirmed that the security incident had been fully contained. In an official security update published on its website, Genesys stated that it had verified there was no compromise involving its cloud platforms or customer hosted environments, reinforcing that the breach was limited to specific internal business systems. The company continues to work with its security teams to determine the complete scope of the unauthorized access while reviewing all potentially affected information.
As part of the incident, the individuals responsible for the unauthorized access are believed to have viewed and likely downloaded business and account information used to manage relationships with existing and prospective customers. The potentially affected information includes customer names, business phone numbers, business email addresses, job titles, company details, account information, and records related to customer interactions. Genesys noted that the compromised information was associated with relationship management activities rather than operational customer data stored within its cloud offerings. While the investigation continues, the company said it will provide additional updates as it confirms what information was accessed and assesses the overall impact. Genesys also advised customers and business partners to remain alert for suspicious communications that may appear to originate from the company. It reminded customers that Genesys does not request sensitive information, including passwords or account credentials, through unsolicited emails or other unexpected communication channels, encouraging organizations to verify any unusual requests before responding.
Although Genesys has not publicly attributed the incident to any specific threat actor, a recently emerged cybercrime group known as ScarlettGroup has claimed responsibility for the attack through its leak site. The company has not confirmed the authenticity of that claim and has not provided additional details regarding the identity of those involved while the investigation remains active. The disclosure highlights the continued risks facing enterprise organizations as attackers increasingly target internal business applications that support customer engagement and operational processes instead of directly attacking production environments. Security experts have frequently noted that systems such as CRM platforms and learning management environments can contain valuable business information that may be used in phishing campaigns or other forms of social engineering if exposed. As investigations continue, organizations that interact with Genesys are encouraged to monitor official updates from the company and remain vigilant against unsolicited messages that could attempt to exploit information associated with the incident.
