As part of this collaboration, DynaSys Networks and Disrupt-X have launched an initiative to enhance ALEF, the unified IoT platform and communications infrastructure in Pakistan. The program is designed to enable the deployment of 40 million smart water meters by 2040, representing one of the largest water digitalization drives in South Asia. The smart meters are expected to modernize metering processes, automate billing, and support water sustainability efforts nationwide. Water scarcity remains a critical issue for Pakistan. Ranked among the 15 most water-stressed countries globally, the nation is projected by International Organization for Migration (IOM) to face absolute water scarcity by 2035 if current consumption and management patterns continue. According to World Wildlife Fund-Pakistan (WWF-P), per capita water availability has declined from around 5,600 cubic meters in 1947 to just 930 cubic meters in 2023. The integration of smart water meters through ALEF will help address these challenges by providing precise monitoring, detecting leaks, and enabling better planning and allocation of water resources. This technology-driven approach is expected to improve conservation measures and promote efficiency across both urban centers and rural communities, where water access remains inconsistent.
