Anthropic Expands Claude Cowork With Integrated Web Browser For AI Tasks

Anthropic has introduced a built in browser for Claude Cowork, allowing its artificial intelligence assistant to access information from the web without depending on the Claude in Chrome extension. The company said Claude Cowork can now recognize when a user prompt requires online information and automatically launch Anthropic custom browser inside a side panel to complete the task. The feature is enabled by default and is already available for Enterprise customers, while Pro, Max, and Team subscribers are receiving access this week. Users and administrators who prefer the previous workflow can switch back to using the Chrome extension through the settings menu. Explaining the change, Anthropic stated that many web related tasks require access to a browser rather than the user primary browser, making an integrated browsing experience more suitable for certain AI driven workflows.

Anthropic has also placed specific limitations on the built in browser to reduce unnecessary access to user accounts and private information. The browser cannot automatically access services that require users to be signed in, including email platforms, banking websites, or other personal accounts, unless the user manually enters their login credentials. As a result, the browser is mainly intended to retrieve publicly available information rather than perform actions through existing browser sessions. The announcement comes at a time when Google Chrome continues to dominate the global browser market, accounting for nearly 70 percent of worldwide web traffic according to Statcounter. At the same time, regulatory efforts in Europe have focused on reducing the influence of default browser choices. Under Article 6(3) of the Digital Markets Act, designated gatekeepers are required to present users with a choice screen during initial device setup, allowing them to select from major browsers, search engines, and virtual assistants. The same regulation has also supported initiatives encouraging Google to provide greater visibility for competing virtual assistants on Android devices. However, Anthropic built in browser does not fall under these requirements because the company is not classified as a designated gatekeeper, Claude is not considered a core platform service, and users do not directly launch the browser as a standalone application.

Despite the introduction of the integrated browser, Anthropic acknowledged that certain security risks remain. The company said prompt injection continues to be a potential concern, referring to attacks where hidden instructions embedded within webpages attempt to influence an artificial intelligence system into performing actions that were not originally intended. According to Anthropic, the new browser uses the same security protections and guardrails already implemented in the Claude in Chrome extension. The company emphasized that these safeguards are designed to reduce risks while allowing the assistant to interact with publicly accessible web content. Security concerns surrounding AI powered browsers have been discussed previously, with earlier reports indicating that Claude Cowork was able to move beyond its local virtual machine environment and access credentials stored on a Mac system under specific circumstances. These developments continue to highlight the importance of balancing convenience with strong security controls as AI assistants gain more direct interaction with online content.

The update also reflects a wider trend across the artificial intelligence industry, where browser functionality is becoming increasingly integrated into AI platforms instead of relying on traditional standalone browsers. OpenAI recently followed a similar direction by discontinuing its standalone Atlas browser and incorporating its capabilities into a Work mode that includes a built in browser. Anthropic has also been gradually making more features part of the default user experience. Earlier updates combined Claude chat and Cowork memory by default while continuing to provide users with the option to disable the feature if they preferred. The latest browser integration further expands that approach by allowing Claude Cowork to retrieve web information directly within the application. As AI assistants continue to evolve, users may increasingly interact with web content through embedded browsing environments that are designed specifically for AI powered tasks rather than opening a separate browser application for every request.
