AI Infrastructure Expansion Drives Global AI Spending To $2.52 Trillion In 2026

Published:

Worldwide spending on artificial intelligence is projected to reach $2.52 trillion in 2026, reflecting a year over year increase of 44 percent, according to new research from Gartner, Inc. The forecast highlights how investment in AI infrastructure continues to be the primary force shaping overall spending, as technology providers accelerate efforts to build foundational systems capable of supporting large scale AI deployment. While enterprises continue to expand their use of AI, Gartner notes that spending patterns increasingly reflect practical implementation needs rather than experimental initiatives, with organizations focusing on stability, scalability, and measurable outcomes.

Gartner analysts emphasized that AI adoption is being shaped less by budget size and more by organizational readiness, including workforce capability and operational maturity. John David Lovelock, Distinguished Vice President Analyst at Gartner, stated that enterprises with deeper experience and clearer self assessment are prioritizing proven results over speculative potential. He noted that throughout 2026, AI remains in what Gartner describes as the Trough of Disillusionment, meaning that enterprises are more likely to adopt AI through existing software vendors rather than pursue large scale standalone projects. According to Lovelock, predictable return on investment remains a prerequisite before AI can be scaled meaningfully across enterprise environments, reinforcing the importance of incremental deployment and integration into established systems.

Infrastructure investment represents the largest share of AI spending growth in the forecast period. Gartner estimates that building AI foundations alone will result in a 49 percent increase in spending on AI optimized servers in 2026, accounting for 17 percent of total AI expenditures. Overall, AI infrastructure is expected to add $401 billion in new spending during the year, driven by technology providers expanding data centers, compute capacity, and specialized hardware to meet rising demand. In dollar terms, AI infrastructure spending is forecast to reach $1.37 trillion in 2026, up from $964.9 billion in 2025, and continue climbing to nearly $1.75 trillion in 2027. This expansion underscores the central role of compute and storage in enabling enterprise and consumer AI applications.

Beyond infrastructure, other segments of the AI market are also experiencing significant growth. Spending on AI services is projected to rise from $439.4 billion in 2025 to $588.6 billion in 2026, while AI software spending is forecast to grow to $452.5 billion during the same period. AI cybersecurity is expected to nearly double year over year, increasing from $25.9 billion in 2025 to $51.3 billion in 2026, reflecting heightened concern around securing AI systems and data. Additional growth areas include AI models, data platforms, application development platforms, and AI focused data solutions, all of which show steady upward trajectories through 2027. Gartner positions itself as a key advisor to enterprise leaders and technology providers navigating this evolving landscape, offering research, tools, and case studies to support informed decision making. The firm will further explore these trends at the Gartner Data and Analytics Summits scheduled across multiple global cities in 2026, where analysts will examine how organizations are aligning data strategies with AI investment priorities.
